Sound design is the process of adding sounds to your film that supports the on-screen visuals and engages the audience. This can be done with sound effects and sound design elements. Now sound design elements are essentially also just sound effects but we like to make a distinction between the two. With sound effects, we try to replicate the on-screen action as closely as possible. If, for example, we see cars driving across the street, we can add driving car sound effects and maybe throw in some honks. With sound design elements we refer to all other sounds that we can use but would not actually hear on set. This includes elements such as Hits, Whooshes, Risers, Atmospheres, Tones, Sub Drops, Glitches. These are great for:
- Creating suspense
- Building up towards a moment
- Adding energy
- Accentuating actions
- Speed Ramps
- Setting a tone
